Arkansas became the 25th state on June 15, 1836 and is currently the 33rd most populous in the United States. It is located in the southeastern region of the country and its capital city is Little Rock. Arkansas is currently home to 3 area codes. Area code 501 was established in 1945 and covers the mostly densely populated area of the state (namely Little Rock and its suburbs). It wasn’t until 1997 that area code 870 was created to service the eastern, southern and northern regions of the state. In 2009, an overlay area code 327 was approved, but implementation has been suspended until further notice due to slow state growth. Most recently, area code 479 was introduced in 2002 and serves 13 counties.
