The state of Colorado contains most of the Southern Rocky Mountains in addition to several larger cities such as Denver. The state’s diverse geography consists of alpine mountains, arid plains, deep canyons, lakes and massive forests. There are four main Colorado area codes, beginning with area code 303 (the oldest). Established in 1947, this one covers the north-central portion of the state including Denver, Boulder and Aurora. It wasn’t until 1988 that area code 719 was introduced to cover the southeastern parts of the state including Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Monument. Approximately seven years later, area code 970 was introduced in 1995 and covers northern and western Colorado including Aspen, Vail, Durango and Grand Junction. Most recently, area code 720 was introduced in 1998 as an overlay and also services the aforementioned north-central cities such as Denver, Boulder and Aurora.
